A telescope is not something that you just walk into a shop and buy impulsively! There are various considerations to be taken into account while purchasing one.Modern cities are pure concrete jungles and nothing more! And if you wish to find a clear patch of sky, you might have to hunt forever! Now, if you are a person fond of traversing the skies in the dark, you would naturally long for a telescope of your own. But you will have to ensure that there is something to view in your location first before buying one, or shift to a better area to fulfill your desire! There is the option of moving to the countryside for a little while at least, in order to view the Heavens with your telescope. On the other hand, if you are a rural dweller and have the whole countryside under your command, then there is really nothing to worry about!Coming to the actual purchase of your telescope, there are a few things to be borne in mind. Telescopes can be very cheap, or they can be moderately-priced, or highly expensive. It all depends on the quality. As a novice to this arena, you might like to start out with something as low as $2; this is similar to a toy telescope. But you might not like sticking with it for too long. So then you can graduate to a second-hand instrument. This will do till you gain experience and become quite proficient at scanning the Heavens. Once you are confident about your telescope-handling skills, you can get a good instrument of your choice. Among the Reflector telescopes, you have the smaller ones costing around $250 to $1000. The Achromatic Reflectors range from $250 to $1000 too, while the Large Reflectors range from $300 to $2000. Apochromatic Refractors are in the higher price range--$2000 $10,000. Compound telescopes range from $1000 to $3000.Okay, you have finally bought the telescope that you desired. It has to be stored in a safe place, for dust and moisture can have an impact on its performance. In fact, try to keep it covered whenever you are not using it. If the lens or eyepiece get clouded with dirt, then what are you going to view? Open-ended telescopes gather more dust than any other type; the mirrors especially, collect dust. So make sure that the mirrors or lenses are always clean and aligned properly. Good maintenance will help your instrument to survive for a long time.If you are going to be carrying your telescope to various locations, do you think it would be wise to purchase a heavy one? Definitely not! Get an instrument that is not only portable, but also fits into your car easily. Above all, wherever you take your telescope, you will be using it in the dark. Knowing how to assemble all the various pieces in the dark would therefore be an advantage. So go on, scan the skies as much as you want!
